That’s what I said on the Happy Black Woman Podcast.
I’m in a season of my life where God has given me a big vision and it can seem overwhelming at times. Accepting new opportunities He’s giving me requires me to put in a lot of work. Before I had developed my relationship with God, when I would become overwhelmed, I would freeze. I would stop making progress. I would live in denial of the task or issue. It was the elephant in the room. I would idly standby hoping eventually a solution would appear or the elephant would disappear but I wouldn’t take any action to make either happen.
As I developed my relationship with God and started to truly believe that with God all things are possible. [Matthew 19:26]
I knew I had the power to overcome this OBSTACLE but I didn’t know how
Until I began using mantras. A mantra is a short word or phrase that helps you regain your focus. When things seem too big for me I take a breath. I pray and ask God to help me (because He holds infinite knowledge & wisdom). Then I remember my seasonal manta:
You can only eat an elephant one bite at a time. And I’m hungry!
I WANT to overcome this elephant! I’m GOING to overcome this elephant. And I’m going to do it ONE step at a time.
If you are struggling with overwhelm I’d like to share with you one way that helps me get through it:
I focus on one task/issue at a time instead of looking at the project/situation as a whole.
While I work on one task I refuse to get distracted. I say NO!
NO shiny balls- Oooo shopping! Ooo Facebook! Oooo TV! Did someone text me!
NO thinking about what happened in the past- The last elephant didn’t look like this…
NO distain for having to do this task- Uhh! I don’t want to do this.
NO to impatience- I wanted this done yesterday!
NO to procrastination- I’ll do it later
And eventually the elephant is gone.
